Your Name In Imaginer 8

As we approach the end of the eight-book Imaginer series, we’re going to do something a little different and we’re offering the opportunity for your name to be included within the book…

The final Imaginer volume, set for publication in 2020

The final Imaginer volume, set for publication in 2020

We’ve previously only offered a chance to include your name in the book to those purchasing deluxe editions but, for this final volume, we’re extending the offer to everyone, at a (lower) price of $100. If you would like to be thanked by name in all copies (both limited and deluxe) of the final Imaginer volume, please head to the store (link below) to purchase this option.

Please note: - this is only for your name to be printed in all editions of Volume 8- ordering this option does not include a copy of the book (which will need to be purchased closer to publication in the usual way)

This final volume is set for publication in late Spring of 2020. However, our print schedule demands that this option will only be available until 3 December 2019.

Pre-orders for Imaginer 8 itself will begin in the New Year and pre-orders for Book 7 (at a reduced pre-publication price) continue to be available now, whilst it is safely in the hands of our printers!

More about the Imaginer Series - Volumes 1 to 7

September Update - Imaginer

We’re conscious that we’ve been a little quiet in recent months about timings for the next volume of the Imaginer series, but we’ve been working hard behind the scenes!

Happily, all of the images and all of the text are now firmly in the hands of our pre-press guru, James, and we’ll be opening pre-orders for Imaginer 7 in two weeks’ time, on 1 October.

We’ve sat with Clive for many hours at his home in Los Angeles and, over the course of several cups of tea and amid some passionate debate, we’ve together selected another wonderful gallery of artwork for Imaginer 7…

…and we’ve completed the selection for Imaginer 8 too…

So the good news is that most of the content for Imaginer 8 is also being prepped and preened so that it can go to print right behind Imaginer 7.  We’ll hold fire on taking pre-orders for that just until we’re sure that everything is in order for that final volume.

That said, if you’re keen to have your name included in the ‘with thanks’ section of the last Imaginer book, be aware that we may have a quick turnaround time to get those names in, and for pre-orders in general, so please make sure you’re signed up to the newsletter (link below) as we'll send a note out ahead of time.

With the print schedules involved in delivering these beautiful books, we don’t expect Imaginer 7 in hand until after Christmas but – all being well – the New Year should bring two volumes and complete the series!

Spring is in the Air

Recent arrivals at the Archive

With Spring sunshine tinting London with its energy, the Archive is all set for new projects over the next few months. As we take stock of recent acquisitions, we realise it’s over a year since we shared some of the things that have been added to the shelves here, so there’s much to catch up on!

The handsome Beardless Warriors / Brothers in Arms set arrived on our doorstep from Gauntlet Press just this week, bearing Clive’s cover art on the second volume, and over past months we’ve seen an ever increasing number of publishers with local language editions of the Shining in the Dark anthology, containing Pidgin and Theresa. Cemetery Dance also produced a chapbook of artwork by Erin S. Wells, inspired by the stories of the anthology.

Non-fiction additions include Jon Towlson’s take on Candyman (including an interview with Bernard Rose), ESC / Bragelonne’s Hellbound Heart translation which includes an interview between Clive and Pete Atkins and accompanied its release of Hellraisers 1-3 on Blu-Ray, and Manchester University Press offers a collection of pieces focussed on various aspects of Clive’s work edited by Sorcha Ní Fhlainn.

But it’s often some of the older, ephemeral things that become uncovered - often with thanks to friends of the Archive - that are most unusual: as Hellraiser debuted on VHS rental in 1988, New World produced a promotional standee featuring the box office data from The Hollywood Reporter on the back; and a set of Murray Close’s black and white contact sheets for Hellbound has happily found its way to the Archive some thirty years after they were created.

Promo VHSs for Gods and Monsters and Lord of Illusions sit next to a much more recent DVD release of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which features Clive’s art on the walls of the Academy of Unseen Arts throughout, and the new Blu-ray release of Candyman.

Of course, Clive’s own notes and working papers form the backbone of the Archive and his manuscript of Heaven’s Reply and a hand-amended Tortured Souls screenplay are new additions.

The growing complexity of the Abarat plot demanded that, whilst writing the third volume, Clive kept a firm track of characters and places by creating a pinboard of index cards, each one devoted to a plot point - these two cards were recently rescued from a water-damaged storage area deep under his library. Once dried off, they could be safely added to others in the Abarat papers, together with the proofreader’s marked up pages for Absolute Midnight.

More news on upcoming projects to follow!

More Plays..!

IMG_1587a.JPG

We're delighted that the next two titles in the Clive Barker Playscripts series are now available in the store!

Hunters in the Snow is set in a medieval, Breughel-inspired landscape and features a character called The Dutchman - a dark, undead witchfinder, summoned by mysterious means - with traits that would later feed into Clive's Mamoulian and Pinhead characters.  Staged in the illustrious Everyman Theatre in Liverpool for just two nights in 1973, this text is a must-read for anyone interested in reading an early iteration of themes that would continue to infuse Clive's writing for many years.

Crazyface was written as a piece commissioned by The Cockpit Youth Theatre in London in 1982. The play follows the trials of a family of fools - particularly the path of Tyl Eulenspiegel as he becomes unwittingly embroiled in a frantic Europe-wide scramble for control of a secret for which nations will go to war...

Hunters in the Snow and Crazyface are available now in the store.

  • Hunters in the Snow: Paperback first edition with cover art by Clive Barker, 118 pages, $7 plus shipping
  • Crazyface: Paperback edition with cover art by Clive Barker, 182 pages, $10 plus shipping

These two join The Magician and The History of the Devil as the first four of Clive's plays to be published by the Archive.  Further titles will become available over coming months!

"These plays are not finished things, they're invitations to collective work... These are blueprints, not houses. I am laying out the ground rules for a circus, and inviting wild beasts, clowns, and strippers on to parade themselves in any and every combination.
"What it comes down to is that these are texts which are meant to be starting places for very particular intellectual and artistic adventures. And they are particular to the group of people who have been gathered there to have the adventure. They are deliberately free-form. They are deliberately overpacked. They are deliberately ragged, unhoned, raw. I make no apology for any of that. They are intended to be, I hope, inspirational rather than repressive.
"They are ways to say to actors and directors and designers, 'Here are some ideas, here are some lines, here are some situations. Make masks, make dance, make music, make mime, make whatever you want to personalise this experience.'"

New Arrivals

blog-apr18.jpg

Recent arrivals in the archive include various editions of Brian James Freeman's excellent Detours anthology which collects shorter pieces of writing which grew as offshoots of authors' current work. These include a lost first chapter of Michael Marshall's Smith's Spares, an abandoned fragment from Ray Bradbury, and Clive's A Night's Work - all fascinating..!

It's always great to come across editions from around the world - although we found these Chinese copies of The Books of Blood pretty close to home in England. The Lilja's Library collection, Shining in the Dark, (including Pidgin And Theresa) has been enjoying multiple translations, so we look forward to seeing more of these in days to come.

Scored to Death collects the thoughts of composers on the horror films they've written for, and includes interviews with Simon Boswell and Christopher Young, to say nothing of a host of other eminent composers!

Idolos del cine is the Spanish edition of Graven Images, a fabulous collection of horror film posters with an essay by Clive in it, and the Death Head artwork poster is a new arrival in the store - in stock and shipping now!

Oh - for those of you eagerly awaiting new titles in the Playscripts Series - we came across a number of handwritten amendments to the script for Hunters in the Snow which delayed us a little whilst we made edits. But we're full steam ahead on those and our next update will have a firm publication date!

In the meantime there are new additions to the Archive gallery, including some rather nice Hellraiser 2 lobby sheets from Spain, some soundtrack covers and the front page of the shooting draft screenplay for Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh - do take a look!
